Jails Action Coalition

Jails Action Coalition

Formed in December 2011, the New York City Jails Action Coalition (JAC) is a grassroots alliance that includes formerly incarcerated individuals and their family members, as well as other community members working to promote human rights, dignity, and safety for people in NYC jails. Over the course of a decade, JAC has led several successful advocacy campaigns, including efforts focused on the conditions that the Department of Correction places our communities most vulnerable in city jails, such as people with mental health and/or substance use addiction, young adults, women, and LGBTQ+ individuals. Today, as people continue to die in NYC jails, JAC’s advocacy has expanded its focus more on reasons for decarceration, diversion, and ending solitary by advancing Intro No 549 and the plan to Close Rikers.
