#HALTsolitary Campaign

#HALTsolitary Campaign

The #HALTsolitary Campaign brings together formerly incarcerated persons, family members of currently incarcerated people, advocates from human rights, health, and faith communities, and other concerned community members throughout New York State to end New York’s use of solitary confinement in state prisons and local jails. The campaign successfully advocated for the Humane Alternatives to Long-Term (HALT) Solitary Confinement Act, which was enacted on March 31, 2021, and continues to push for full implementation of the HALT Act. The #HALTsolitary Campaign and Jails Action Coalition led the effort to end solitary confinement entirely in NYC jails. On January 30, 2024, the New York City Council enacted Local Law 42 which bans all forms of solitary confinement and provides for alternative forms of separation which better support people’s health and improve safety for everyone.
